Improvement Method of Damage Value Assessment

Purpose

To prevent cracking in aluminium products when upsetting hex head.

Method

1. Examine the actual product and check the crack area.

2.Check the material flow by simulation.
Confirm that the hex end faces are deformed without being subjected to
compressive stress because the hex upset and extrusion are done at the same time.

3.The crack mechanism is estimated to be failure due to accumulated ductile strain.
Damage values are calculated by simulation.

4.To reduce the damage value, the process was changed so that extrusion and upsetting are set in separate processes.
Then comfirm the damage value has been reduced.

Result

Crack during hex upsetting is solved.
